About Tania Johnson

Tania Johnson Design specializes in custom designed, contemporary, hand knotted rugs.
Inspired by the natural world around her, the way light creates shadows and reflections, the microscopic details found in nature and the infinite textures created through layering, Tania creates ethereal designs and translates them into intricately woven wool and silk rugs.

Tania Johnson Design is owned by New York based Textile Designer, Tania Johnson. British born, Tania graduated from London’s Royal College of Art with an MA in woven textiles. As a designer for Calvin Klein Home for several years, she designed the brands’ first rug collection in 2002, and further developed her passion for innovative rug design.
In May 2010 Tania Johnson launched her debut collection of hand knotted rugs under her own label, Tania Johnson Design.

Tania’s custom-made pieces feature original, sophisticated designs, and are hand knotted by artisans in Nepal in the traditional Tibetan style. The earthy but contemporary patterns are inspired by intricate details of nature – among them subtle plays of light, shadows and reflection – which are portrayed through Tania’s meticulous color choice, high knot counts and combinations of Himalayan wool, Chinese silk and pashmina.
With her background in woven textiles and over 14 years experience working as a textile designer, Tania Johnson specializes in bringing to her clients the ability to create beautiful designs and to then translate them into rugs.  From the initial design concept through to creating the actual weaving graph for the weavers to follow, Tania Johnson Design can take you through each step of the rug design process. Each rug is made-to-order and can take several months to complete. Designs can be produced in different knot counts, fibers, pile heights, colors and sizes.

Throughout her career, Tania has travelled extensively to oversee manufacturing for various employers and clients, and this hands-on approach has led to her commitment to promoting fair labor standards in the carpet industry. Tania personally visited factories in Nepal to find a manufacturer who was not only able to produce her challenging designs, but who also valued social responsibility. Tania Johnson Design is a member of GoodWeave which aims to eliminate child labor and to improve working conditions for adults.
